As humans we can live a few weeks without food, a few days without water, but only a few minutes without the breath. The scriptures of many faiths, belief systems, religions, and spiritual practices all at some point identify the breath, and our connection to the breath as a key ingredient in the pursuit of spiritual life. The world “inhalation” comes from the same root as the word “inspiration”, which comes from a word that means “in spirit”. The word “exhalation” comes from the same root as the word “exultation”, so we see that the breathing process is also related to how we feel.
So how do we connect to this powerful force that is literally right under our nose?? Fortunately the saints, sages, yogis and martial artist have left us with innumerable practices designed to reconnect us to the power of breath. This course will begin an exploration into the breathing process, and offer various breathing techniques to help us tap into this power. With gentle movement to help open the breathing passageway, and light meditation to help seal in the experience, join Breath is Key on Saturdays to deepen your connection to Self.

More About J Miles
J Miles is yoga teacher who has been dancing to the rhythm of life since childhood. Yogi, martial artist, body worker, retired breakdancer, community activist, and the son of a Baptist minister, J has been learning and studying eastern arts and philosophy for nearly two decades. Movement, creativity and exploration of the self through movement have always been a constant source of confidence. Over the years J has crafted a style tempered by real life and humor, and relies on the importance of breath as a guide and a source of strength. His classes aim to create for each person a fluid, sustainable and enjoyable practice, that hopefully will prove to be beneficial over a lifetime. And even as this ancient practice continues to evolve, the mantra continues to be “practice is effort toward steadiness of mind”.
